Riley True, of Plainview, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014. Services for Mr. True will be Monday, June 30, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church in Plainview, Texas at 10:30 in the morning, directed by Kyle Brock with a graveside service to follow. Visitation will be at Kornerstone Funeral Home on Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. True was born in Goree, Texas to Snoden Mattox and Nettie Belle Stalcup True on January 4, 1930. He became a Hale County resident in 1933 beginning his lifelong devotion to agriculture. He attended Snyder Community School and graduated from Plainview High School in 1947. At the age of 18, True was granted an opportunity to see the world through the eyes of the U.S. Navy and proudly served two tours from 1948 to 1953. Following his service, he joined the family farming operation and farmed for a total of 64 years. On October 24, 1959 True married Margaret Hackler of Olton. True was dedicated member of St. John’s, Trinity, and then Grace United Methodist Churches in Plainview since childhood. He served on many committees, as an outward expression of his faith. However, most experienced his servant heart through his constant random acts of kindness. True was the first to offer a helping hand to someone in need without overlooking a neighbor or stranger, never expecting to be repaid. He instilled a faith and love for Christ in his family. True was an all-around agricultural advocate with experience in dairy, cotton, livestock, grain crops, watermelons, sunflowers, and more. His passion for agriculture extended into the boards on which he served. For Hale County, True served as a director for Hale County Farm Bureau for many years and United Farm Industries for 26 years. True’s first love and passion was cotton; he promoted it in many ways, from nurturing a seed to fostering the production of denim on an international scale. For 25 years, True served on Plains Cotton Cooperative Association Board of Directors, embodying his passion for the industry he loved. True is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Carl Russell True and SM True, Jr.; his sisters, Nell Marie Thornton, Lorine Mote, Mary Eunice Sherman, and Dorothy Setliff; and his daughter Debi True Rounds. He is survived by: his wife, Margaret True of Plainview; his sister and brother-in-law, Ona Belle and Bill Stephens of Overland Park, Kansas; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Mary True of Plainview; his grandchildren, Randall and Christina Smith of Lubbock; Rebecca and Curtis Mason of Hermleigh; Kaitlyn True of Lubbock and Markus Miller of Pampa; Kristen True of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Brayden McDonald and Truman Smith. In the spirit of his generous heart, the family requests memorials be made in his honor to Grace United Methodist Church of Plainview, South Plains Honor Flight, or the charity of your choosing.
