Bill LaFont (Plainview)

William Harold LaFont, 86, of Plainview passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2026. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Plainview Cemetery. Born on May 14, 1940, in Plainview, Texas. Bill was the son of Judge Harold Matthew LaFont and Jane Powell LaFont.

Bill was a devoted man to his hometown, Plainview, and the Lord. His journey of service began long ago as a young boy helping his father on the farm and grew throughout his high school years as a multi-sport athlete in football and tennis and his college years as a Texas Cowboy and fraternity member of Phi Delta Phi, where he learned what it meant to be part of a community. Upon earning his Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas, Bill returned to his hometown to practice law at LaFont, Tunnel, Formby, LaFont & Hamilton for more than 50 years in service of his community. He spent his free time reading the Gospel and sharing the Holy Spirit and Christ’s love through his Sunday School lesson, following in the footsteps of his father. As a constant counselor, Bill used his skills and passion to help anyone in need or willing to seek advice. As an outdoorsman, he would often use his leisure time to fish, golf, or hunt with his friends and children. He was a loving father, dedicated son, diligent husband, and a man that found a calling and shared everything he had to offer. His grace and generosity lives on in those that were blessed to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy LaFont, his daughter, Emily LaFont of Lubbock, Texas, his sons, Chris Chapman of Dallas, Texas, Christopher LaFont of Sterling, Nebraska, and Matt LaFont of Richmond, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by Ellie LaFont (mother to Chris Chapman, Matt LaFont and Nicole Steffe) and his parent his parents, Judge Harold LaFont and Jane LaFont, and his sister Gail LaFont Huie.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any remembrances be made to Plainview High School’s “Ellie/Heather Scholarship Fund”.
