Billy Charles “Doc” Cross of Amarillo, formerly of Plainview, passed away June 11, 2025. A private family service will be held.
Doc Cross was born June 3, 1930, in Whiteflat, Texas. He grew up in Roaring Springs, Texas. As a young man, he enjoyed working with animals. He rode horses and even competed in a few rodeos.
He married Mary Helen Stephens on September 10, 1949, in Amarillo, Texas. They lived in Lubbock, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and finally settled in Plainview, Texas, as Doc learned to lay carpet. He and Mary Helen raised four children – Steve, Dolores, Tonya, and Rick.
In 1969 he opened Doc Cross Carpets. Doc was elected to the Plainview ISD Board of Trustees in 1975 and served for 8 years. He served as President of the Board in 1981. He and Mary Helen loved to square dance. Doc served as President of the Texas Federation of Square and Round Dance Association. They traveled extensively throughout Texas during his term as President. In their later years, they were members of the Senior Dance Club in Plainview, Texas. They attended dances regularly.
In 1982, he sold his store and he and Mary Helen retired. They did some traveling, including going on parts of the Sesquicentennial Wagon Train of Texas.
Doc loved God, and he loved his family. He is preceded in death by Mary Helen. He is survived by his children: Steve Cross; Dolores (Jerry) Ticer; Tonya Keesee; and Rick Cross; grandchildren Leah (Bryan) Beck; Avery (Christina) Ticer; Dustin (Andrea) Glenn; Devin (Aidyn) Glenn; Seth Cross; and Sean (Braelynn) Cross; and great grandchildren Bart Ticer, Rose Ticer, and June Ticer; and Aspen Glenn.
