While working as a medical secretary in Dothan, she met the love of her life, Elmer Ray Koenning, who was serving in the United States Army and stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama. On June 1, 1952, they were married at Bethesda Baptist Church near Slocomb, Alabama. Following Elmer's discharge from the Army, they settled in Plainview, Texas, where they built a life together, raised their family, and established deep roots in the community.

Eva Mae was a devoted farmer's wife and a loving, dedicated mother to her three sons, Michael Koenning, David Koenning, and Don Koenning. Later in life, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a licensed nurse and found great joy in caring for the elderly, a calling that reflected her genuine love for people. She was known for offering her patients a comforting prayer and a warm hug, attending to both their physical and spiritual needs. Alongside her beloved husband, Elmer, she built a life grounded in faith, hard work, and integrity. Together they shared 64 years of marriage before his passing in 2016. Throughout their lives in Plainview, Elmer and Eva Mae remained faithful, active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
