After winning many battles in an eight-year fight against a relentless foe in cancer, Gaye Gelene Young finally lost the war and passed away from this life on June 7, 2024. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Gaye was born in Tulia, Texas on April 20th, 1940 as the first child to Deryl Wayne and Gennie V. George.
She started school a year early so she would not be the only child in her class at Kaffir Switch. Upon closing of the rural school, she made a serendipitous move into the Tulia school system. Serendipitous because that is where she met her teenage sweetheart and lifelong love Don Young. Two years after high school graduation they were married on September 10th, 1959 and spent nearly sixty-five years loving each other.
Gaye was one of the first of a new generation of women, working full time, involved in the community, and raising a family. Working first as an executive assistant to presidents at First National Bank of Amarillo and First State Bank in Tulia. She ended her career as assistant to Bob Colson at his State Farm Insurance agency. During those years, she served on the Tulia Chamber of Commerce board, Swisher Memorial Building board, and the Mid-Tule Village board. She also was extremely involved in the Central Church of Christ, the Country Friends extension club, and Beta Sigma Phi. As if that were not enough, she found time to raise her son and daughter, Guy Wayne, and Gigi Ann Young.
Post retirement, Gaye enjoyed life as a full- time devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She helped Don in everything he did, and she helped her children be better parents, and served as the greatest example to them and their children. She traveled, made friends everywhere, smiled incessantly and was admired for her attitude and Christian spirit.
Gaye is survived by her loving spouse Don Young, children Guy Wayne Young and Gigi Ann Underwood, Daughter in law Lisa Young, Son in law Jeff Underwood, grandchildren Lauren Young and Morgan Underwood, her brother Pat George and his wife Sue George, sister-in-law Vicki Ulbrich and her husband Ken Ullbrich, as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a grandson Logan Underwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens 619 SE 2nd St, Tulia, TX 79088, or the High Plains Children’s Home, 11461 S Western St, Amarillo, TX 79118.
