Gilberto was born on January 28, 1963, in El Porvenir, Mexico, to Ramón Ortega and Alicia Ortega Sandoval. From a very young age, he was an exemplary son and brother, known for his kind heart and generosity. He always placed the needs of others before his own and, while still just a child, began working to help support his family.

At the age of 11, he began his first job in a peach orchard and by age 13 a new job making bricks. He quickly learned the trades and worked hard to ensure that every cent earned helped provide food and meet the needs of his parents and siblings. His extraordinary work ethic was evident to everyone who knew him. For Gilberto, work was not simply a responsibility—it was a personal commitment to always give his very best.

During his youth, he also worked in the cotton fields as a migrant farmworker, washed cars, mowed lawns, and performed various odd jobs in communities throughout Mexico. At the age of sixteen, he immigrated with his family to the United States, where he began a new chapter working at a meatpacking plant in Booker, Texas. Over the years, he refined his skills while working at several meat processing plants before becoming a Floor Supervisor at National Beef in Liberal, Kansas.

In addition to being an outstanding worker, Gilberto was passionate about sports. Whenever he wasn't working, he enjoyed watching and attending sporting events. He was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers, and whenever he had the opportunity, he proudly traveled to cheer them on while wearing the gear of his favorite teams.

His greatest joy, however, was supporting his family. He rarely missed a game involving his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, or great-nephews. He loved attending their baseball, basketball, football, and other sporting events. In recent years, it was common to see him enthusiastically cheering on his nephews at Little League games in Plainview and Floydada, as well as at Wayland Baptist University basketball games.

Gilberto not only loved watching sports—he was also an excellent athlete. He excelled as a baseball catcher and was even scouted for a professional baseball team in Mexico at the age of 19. He also enjoyed playing basketball alongside his brothers in community leagues.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Mauricio Ortega; his beloved wife, Margaret Ann Ortega; and his stepson, Ricky Olivas.

He leaves behind to honor and cherish his memory his loving parents, Alicia and Ramón Ortega; his siblings: Arturo Ortega (Jackie) Liberal, Kansas, Irma Ortega of Hale Center, Texas; Celia Pérez (Hernando Pérez) of Spearman, Texas; Ramón Ortega (María Ortega) of Plainview, Texas; Gerónimo Ortega (DeeDee Ortega) of Amarillo, Texas; Ana Maria Dávila (Eleno Dávila) of Lockney, Texas; Carmen Ortega of Plainview, Texas; and María Horton (Matt Horton) of Plainview, Texas. He is also survived by his daughters, Mónica Piña and Sonya Piña; his stepdaughter, Teresa Olivas; and his stepsons, Santiago Olivas and José Olivas, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Gilberto will always remember his wonderful sense of humor. He loved telling jokes, sharing stories, and making those around him laugh. He always found something good in every situation and brought joy to everyone fortunate enough to spend time with him. Although his childhood was filled with challenges, he never allowed those hardships to define his character. Instead, he chose to live with humility, generosity, respect, and a deep love for his family.

Today our hearts feel an immense loss, but they are also filled with profound gratitude for having shared life with such a remarkable brother, son, father, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, strength, service, and unconditional love for his family. Though we will miss him deeply every day, we know his memory will live on forever through the stories we share, the lessons he taught us, and the love he planted in each of our hearts.

You will always live in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Gilberto. Until God allows us to meet again.
