John C. Anderson, 87, of Plainview, Texas passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at his home. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 4, 2021 at First Baptist Church with Mr. Danny Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview.
John was born on August 1, 1933 in Eskota, Texas, east of Sweetwater, to James Jefferson and Bertha Anderson. He married Edna Nash on February 3, 1951 in Sweetwater.
After serving in the U.S. Army for three years, teaching vocational agriculture for two years in Sweetwater and Petersburg and spending more than 10 years with Baker Castor Oil Company in Plainview, John began his banking career as an agricultural representative for First National Bank of Plainview. He later served as president and chief executive officer of Hale County Sate Bank.
A longtime member of the Lions Club, John was very involved in leadership positions in his community, serving on the board of directors for the Plainview Stock Show, Plainview-Hale County Industrial Foundation, and Covenant Hospital where his name is on a wing.
The Plainview Chamber of Commerce honored him as Man of the Year in 1979.
He served on the board of directors of Bank of Commerce in McLean and Citizens Bank in Slaton and received the Distinguished Banking Service Award in 1995.
John received the Outstanding South Plains Agricultural Award in 1985 and named Man of the Year in Texas Agriculture in 1991.
His alma mater, Texas Tech, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1953, presented him the Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturist Award in 1986 and named him a Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources in 1992. He also served as chairman of the Dean’s Council for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Gov. George W. Bush appointed John to the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board.
He ably served as the Mayor of Plainview from 2003 to 2012.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tom Anderson and Jeff Anderson and sister Ruth Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; a daughter, Sheila Lee of Plainview; two sons, Mike Anderson and wife Donna of Georgetown, Texas and Jeff Anderson and wife Stacy of El Paso, Texas; by six grandchildren, Jon Robert Anderson and his wife Katy, Reed Anderson, Jared Krammer and his wife Teresa, Christopher Lee, and Jeffrey and Matthew Anderson and two great-grandchildren, Henry and Isla Anderson.
The family extends their special thanks to Adella Reyes for her care of John and Edna for the past ten years.
The family suggests memorials to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
