John Wesley Brookins (Tulia)

John Wesley Brookins, 100, of Tulia passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 18, 2026 in the Central Church of Christ Church with Mr. Bob Colson officiating and Mr. Stacy McCasland assisting. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, September 17, 2026 at the funeral home.

John was born on October 20, 1925, in Flat Woods, Community Texas, to Judd and Para Lee (Sheppard) Brookins.

John's early years were spent in the embrace of his close-knit family, where he exemplified dedication and commitment from a young age. After attending school until the fifth grade, he made the noble decision to help his father with the family business, a choice that laid the foundation for a life of hard work.

On September 19, 1952, John married the love of his life, Frankie D. Johnson, in Waxahachie, Texas. Their union was a testament to love and partnership as they built a life together in Tulia, Texas, nearly sixty-four years, where John would become a longstanding pillar of the community through his lifelong work as a farmer. His career spanned many years and included working with Fred Combest in the early 50’s, and a few years later he returned and worked for Aruthur Jennings and later worked for Jack Montague and retired with Benny Montague.

He cherished the moments spent hunting quail with his boys, recalling fond memories of playing baseball in his youth. His hands were never idle; he found joy in mechanic work, delighting in the intricacies of tractors, trucks, and cars.

A man of deep faith, John loved to sing Gospel music, especially during family gatherings after meals. These cherished moments brought everyone together, filling their hearts with joy and gratitude.

John was known for his serious demeanor, often reflecting a deep wisdom that only came with years of experience. Yet, those who were fortunate enough to know him understood that beneath this serious exterior lay a gentle humor and warmth. He had a unique way of bringing joy to those around him with his witty remarks, reminding us of all that laughter can often be found even in the simplest moments.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Judd and Para Lee Brookins; his wife, Frankie D. Brookins, his infant daughter, Patricia A. Brookins; his daughter, Rebecca Caldwell; his sons, Gilbert L. Brookins and Jerry L. Brookins; his son-in-law, Larry Hawthorne; his daughter-in-law, Pattie Brookins; his brothers and sisters, George Brookins, Flora Johnson, Earlene Green, Mae’Ola Thomas, Eula Adams, Earnest Reed, Judson Brookins, Maryana Grainger and Johnny Reed.

He is survived by his children, Bon C. Johnson of Dallas, Freddie W. Brookins of Tulia, Mae Hawthorne of Tulia and Barabra Brookins-Hill and husband Morris of Cedar Hill; his sister, Lula Spence of Wilmer, T.X.; numerous grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and numerous great, great grandchildren and all who he loved and cherished.
