It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Maria Ramos, on Sunday, 29th of September. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 4, 2024, in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel, with Deacon Jackie Gunnels officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
A rosary will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 3, 2024, in the Kornerstone Chapel.
Maria was born on October 25,1931 in Otine, Texas, (near Lockhart, Texas) the first born of 13 children to Emigdio and Jauna Ramos. She was a graduate of Shallowater High School. She was the first person in her family to attend college and graduated from the University of Texas Tech with honors with a Bachelor of Education degree. After which she began teaching and continuing her postgraduate studies, teaching in towns from Las Cruces and Carlsbad, New Mexico to Moses Lake, Washington.
While teaching she attended classes at the University of New Mexico and University of Colorado at Boulder, earning both a Masters and Doctorate of Education from CU. While pursuing her Ph.D. in education at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Maria Ramos authored a micro-ethnographic study examining speech patterns and language features used by Chicana mothers. The study highlights detailed language use and is significant for educators of Chicano students from low economic backgrounds. It helps cultural socialization methods and subtle communication patterns between teachers and students, aiding a successful educational and learning process.
She was an educator for over 40 years, many of which were in Houston, teaching young children how to read, her lifelong work. After she retired, she went back to her beloved farm and garden in Tulia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Marcelina Harrell, Ventura Ramos, Emigdio Ramos Jr., and Juan Ramos.
She is survived by her siblings Isidoro Ramos, Petra Porras, Francisca Zavala, Jose Ramos, Petra Lupe Diaz, Flora Burton, Irene Prado, and Jesse Ramos.
