Ray was born in Randolph, Fannin County, Texas to Marion and Ida (Gann) Johnston. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1955. He served in the US Army from 1956-1960 stationed in Korea. He also served in the Texas National Guard. He married Linda Sonnamaker on July 14, 1961. They lived in several places on the South Plains where he was a cotton ginner. He was very proud of a small gin he built in Haskell for a cotton research facility. He worked for Lubbock Cotton Growers when he retired. They moved to Seagraves in 2000.

Ray was a jack -of-all-trades. He had a good head on his shoulders and could fix anything. He attended many of the Texas Cotton Ginners Association meetings and was well respected among the Cotton Gin Community.

Ray loved to play golf and loved to brag about how he could grill the best steak ever, which was no lie. It was the best. He loved music either listening or making his own especially in the church where he worshipped. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and was presently a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Seagraves.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Linda Johnston, she died September 18, 2020 and three brothers: Johnny Johnston, Marshall Johnston and Harold Johnston.

He is survived by two sons: Eddie Johnston and wife Julie of Alvin, Ron Johnston and wife Levita of Amarillo, one daughter: Monetta Barron and husband Bobby of Seagraves and five grandchildren: Rachel Johnston of San Antonio, Lyndsay Johnston of Lubbock, Landon Johnston of Amarillo, Valerie Juliao and husband Conrad of Lubbock and Seth Barron and wife Kelsey of Seagraves.
