Sherry Ann Benson Vaughn (Tulia)

Sherry Ann Benson Vaughn, age 89, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on June 12, 2025. A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia, Texas, on June 14, 2025, at 11:00am with Reverend Charles Davenport officiating.

Sherry was born on January 1, 1936, in Hereford, Texas, a New Year's baby to her parents, Haskell Fay Benson and Verdie May Johnson Benson.

Sherry met her husband, Boyd W. Vaughn, at West Texas State University, where they were college sweethearts. They were married on June 12, 1956, at the Hill Chapel on the WTSU campus. Boyd has been true to his vows of, "in sickness and in health until death do us part” as he has cared diligently for Sherry through her Alzheimer’s journey. A love story of 69 years. She passed on their 69th Anniversary.

Sherry was a spectacular mom and “Grand Sherry” to her daughters and grandchildren. She always supported them in all their pursuits. She and Boyd made many trips to Fort Worth and Amarillo to be a part of the grandchildren’s lives. She loved seeing their first great granddaughter, Anna.

She was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church in Tulia, where she lovingly served in the church library and generously helped prepare countless meals for grieving families during funeral services. Her quiet acts of kindness and faithful service reflected a life of grace and compassion.

A beloved educator, Sherry taught Home Economics at Tulia Junior High for many years, impacting countless students with her warmth, wisdom, and practical skills. She was especially well known for her delicious Christmas tea rings, gifts that became a cherished tradition throughout the community. She was always ready with a listening ear, a helping hand, or a home-cooked meal. Her baking talents were legendary and brought joy to all who were lucky enough to enjoy her creations.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Boyd W. Vaughn; two daughters, Valerie Freeman and husband Bob of Fort Worth, and Delisa Boyd and husband Ernie of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Corbin Freeman of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tanner Freeman and wife Brooke of Bentonville, Arkansas, Harrison Boyd of Amarillo, and Alexandra Boyd and fiancé, Hayden Sanders, of Amarillo; and one great-granddaughter, Anna Vaughn Freeman, of Bentonville, Arkansas. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joann Vaughn Thatcher of Amarillo, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

Sherry was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Evelyn Hacker Dowell and Norma Genelle Sigle; and her nephew, Johnny Brent Sigle.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of Mary's Place, BSA Hospice, BSA Compassion Home Health, and Superior Care at Home for their devotion, kindness, and tender care of Sherry.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Amarillo or First Baptist Church of Tulia.
