Vera Thornton (Tulia)

Vera Thornton, 97 passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at Rose Hill cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service at the funeral home from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M.

Vera was born May 28, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan the 7th of nine children to Julius and Jenny Young Waller. The family moved to Texas when she was a baby. They later moved to Floydada where she graduated from Floydada High School in 1945. She married Warren Rae Thornton June 16, 1946 which began a love affair that lasted until Rae's death in 2014. Michael Ray was born in 1948 but passed away suddenly from polio in 1949. Linda Ann was born in 1950 and Timothy Wayne in 1953. The family moved to Tulia in 1950 and joined the First Baptist Church.

Here Rae and Vera spent their life working together and raising their family. During the early years Vera was a homemaker and mother, the work she loved dearly. In 1962 Vera went to work as Secretary to Gordon Gatewood, junior high school principal. For the next 30 years she worked for the Tulia Independent School System in various functions. As a member of First Baptist Church she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, Bible School, served on the bereavement committee among other ministries and was a friend and confident to many who benefited from her charm and wisdom. She is survived by her children; Linda & Larry Miller and Tim & Robyn Thornton; her grandchildren; Amy Bonds, Matt & Megan Thornton and Luke & Tara Thornton; her great grandchildren; Cameron and Braden Bonds, Aalayah, Brendon and Issac Thornton, Oliver and Tinley Thornton and one surviving sister; Eva Richardson.

Vera loved the Lord, Rae, her family and friends. She will be missed by us here on earth but has joined the Church Everlasting.
