V.H. Harman, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2023. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. A private family burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. The funeral service will be under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
V.H. as most people knew him, was born December 19, 1932, to Vernon Harman, Sr. and Mary McGlaun Harman in Tulia, Texas and attended school in Happy, Texas where he was Salutatorian of his senior class.
V.H. attended West Texas State University and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration. In 2015, he received the Distinguished Alumni award from West Texas A &M University.
After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, he returned to Tulia and joined his father Vernon, Sr., Hol Ed and John Frank Toles as a partner in Harman Toles Grain Elevator and Seed Company. In 1970, Harman-Toles built the Swisher County Cattle Company. In 1971, Boone Pickens’ Mesa Petroleum purchased Harman Toles and Swisher County Cattle Company. V.H. then entered another partnership to form Texas Tops Feedlot. Throughout his lifetime he was an active partner in the building, investing and sale of other businesses such as Frontier Capital Group and First United Bank. V.H. was also active in Tulia and Swisher County boards as well as other city and regional boards. In 1988, he received the Tulia Outstanding Man of the Year Award.
While in the military, he married Dovie Jane Jones of Hereford, Texas on July 3, 1955. Upon their return to Tulia, they had two daughters, Celeste and Cherylon.
V.H. was proceeded in death by his parents, an infant granddaughter, Lindsey Paige McLean, a grandson, Jantz Harman Jackson and Dovie Harman.
V.H. is survived by daughters Celeste McLean and spouse Gene of Fort Worth, Cherylon Jackson and spouse Jimmy of Plano, two grandchildren, Meghan McLean Curtis and spouse Justin, Colin Thomas McLean and one great grandson, Henry Arden Curtis. He is also survived by his brother Rickey Harman and his family.
V.H. was a gifted entrepreneur/businessman but most importantly he was a highly philanthropic person in his community. In 1994 V.H. became one of the founding members of the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy/DMD in honor of his grandson, Jantz Harman Jackson.
