Virginia Sue Thornton (Tulia)

Tulia, Texas—Virginia Sue Thornton, 78, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church with Mrs. Lee Moore and Mrs. Dee Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.

Virginia was born on June 16, 1944, in Plainview, Texas to Daniel G. and Eula (Turner) Shelton. She graduated from Silverton High School in 1963. After graduating high school, she enrolled at Draughn’s College for Business and came to Tulia to work for Red Baldwin as a CPA for two years. She met the love of her life J Thornton and got married at a farmhouse at Rock Creek on February 28, 1969. They moved to Colorado and lived for a year and decided to come back to Tulia, where Virginia worked as a deputy tax assessor and later being the tax assessor for 30 years. She retired from the tax office and helped J work in the ranching business. Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tulia, where she and her sister Innette would cook for the church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and loved her Sonic Dr. Pepper every day. She spent extra ordinary amount of time with her grandchildren. Virginia was known as “Nana” by her family and friends. Nana loved Jesus Christ and her family with all her heart.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel, and Eula Shelton; five brothers and one sister.

She is survived by her husband, J Thornton of Tulia; her two sons, Charles Thornton and wife Sherry of Tulia and Jay Lynn Thornton of Tulia; her brother, Calvin Shelton of Silverton; her sister, Martha Lou McJimpsey of Amarillo; her grandchildren, Christine and husband Pete Garcia, Dustin Thornton, Courtney Jo Thornton and fiancé Joel Corrales, Bailey Hicks, Jordan DeLeon, Dalton Thornton, four great grandchildren and her fur baby, Patches.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 119 N. Briscoe Ave., Tulia, TX 79088, or to the Swisher Memorial Residential Living Center, 539 S.E. 2nd St., Tulia, Texas 79088.
