Wayne Edward Stewardson (Plainview)

Wayne Edward Stewardson, 94, passed into a peaceful sleep on July 24, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas. He was born on November 20, 1931, in Santa Anna, Texas, to John M. Stewardson and Willie B. Scarborough Stewardson.

Wayne’s family roots were deeply important to him. His father, John, was born in Coleman County, while his mother, Willie B., was raised near Austin, Texas. They married in 1924, continuing the Stewardson family’s Texas legacy—a heritage that Wayne cherished throughout his life. He considered Coleman County “God’s Country.”

Raised in Santa Anna, Wayne graduated from Santa Anna High School and then attended telegrapher school in Fort Worth. In 1950, he began his career with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, where he worked for more than 45 years. During his railroad career, he worked in Plainview, Lockney, and Amarillo.

Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Army for two years and was stationed at the Port of Whittier, Alaska. 

While living in Plainview, Wayne met his sweetheart, Ora Mae Deen. They were married on December 20, 1954, and shared a loving marriage built on faith and family for fifty-six years. Together they made their home in Plainview, where they raised their two daughters.

A man of faith, Wayne was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview. He was also a dedicated member of the Masonic fraternity, attaining the honorary status of 32° Mason and remaining active in the Grand Lodge of Texas for more than seventy years. In addition, he was a proud Shriner for over fifty years.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mae, his brother, Virgil Stewardson, and his sister, Velma Benton.

He is survived by his daughters, Beverly Hightower and husband Jack of Homer, Louisiana, and Becky York and husband Perry of Amarillo, Texas; granddaughters Ashley York and Katie York, both of Amarillo; and his great-grandchildren, Hagen and Adeline Hutto of Amarillo.

A graveside service will be held at the Plainview Memorial Park Cemetery at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, July 27, 2026 under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview, Texas.
