Tulia, Texas- Willis S. Harrison, 70, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the New Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Matthew Veals officiating. Cremation services are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
Willis was born on July 31, 1951, in Atoka, Oklahoma to Ernest and Jewerl (Monroe) Harrison. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1969 and later enlisted in the United States Army as a Paratrooper and was honorably discharged in 1980. Willis was the first African American police officer to work at the Plainview Police Department and he also worked at the Lamesa and Amarillo Police Departments. He married Vanessa Howard on August 14, 2005, at the New Fellowship Baptist Church in Tulia. After working in law enforcement for many years he worked in construction, Tyson’s Meat Packing and his last job was at the Railroad Crew Express in Amarillo until he became very ill. Willis was a very hard worker and achieved many things in life. He was a member of the New Fellowship Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Jewerl Harrison.
He is survived by his wife, Vanessa Harrison, his children, Sharone Hines, Demetrius Thompson, Tempestt Johnson, Kristal Yarbrough, Antoinette Yarbrough, Marcus Owens and Raymond Owens, Jr., numerous grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
