Tulia, Texas—Bettie Hickman, 86, died Thursday, May 16, 2013 in Tulia. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 in the First Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Ernie McGaughey officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the funeral home. Bettie was born March 3, 1927 in Shamrock, Oklahoma. She grew up in the Texas panhandle and Oklahoma. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1944. She received her associate’s degree from Amarillo College in May 1946. She married Gene Hickman on November 16, 1946. While at Amarillo College she was a member of the Gamma Theta Chi Sorority. She was a certified radio operator during WWII and was very active in the USO in Amarillo. After her marriage she worked for the Swisher Creamery in Tulia. She was also a homemaker and a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church holding many volunteer positions in the church. She was an award winning artist and was a member of the Plains Art Association in Plainview and the Amarillo Fine Art Association. Bettie is preceded in death by her parents: M.M. and Ethel Carroll, her husband: Gene Hickman and a grandson: Tim Sanders. She is survived by two daughters: Marsha Sanders and husband Don of Tulia, Jo Briley and husband Jeff of Odessa, one brother: Leroy Carroll of Amarillo, two sisters: Louise George and husband J.A. of Amarillo and Jonell Williams and husband Marvin of Burnett, two sisters-in-law: Lou Hardy and husband W.T. of Fritch and Anna Lee Schuster and husband Elmer of Tucumcari, New Mexico and two granddaughters: Leah Fawcett and husband Dan of Royse City and Becky Greendyke and husband Bob of Beavercreek, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the Nursing Scholarship Program, WTAMU, 2501 4th Ave., Canyon, Texas 79016, the First Presbyterian Church, 113 N. Donley, Tulia, Texas 79088 or to the Tulia Cemetery Association, PO Box 116, Tulia, Texas 79088.
