James Weldon "Papaw" Moody (Plainview)

James Weldon “Papaw” Moody was born on July 31, 1932 to Elijah and Mildred Moody in Marysville, Texas.  He passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023.

Weldon served in the United States Army from 1952-1954.  He then started his 41 year career with the Texas Department of Transportation. 

Weldon was a man of faith who had a servant’s heart.  He was a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Bovina, and a member of College Heights Baptist church of Plainview for over 40 years. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Mildred, a sister, Yvonne Stevenson, a brother, Alfred Moody. Weldon was also preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Lavonia Moody; and his second wife Mary Scarbrough and daughter Diana Scarbrough Jones. 

He is survived by two sisters, Sue Phillips, and Louise Hawkins; Children, Elyse Anderson, Robbie Schroeder (Cass), Karl Vaughn (Nan), DeeDee Gustin (Darris), Joni Foote (David), David Vaughn (Kim), and Linda Johnston, Daryl Scarbrough (Andrea), Debbie Brakeen (Gary), and Donna Kay Jones.

He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on May 27, 2023 at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas.  Burial will follow in the Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
